An Offensive Outburst in a Dodger Bullpen Game

Under clear skies, the Los Angeles Dodgers swatted the Miami Marlins 15-to-2 on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium. Though it was a bullpen game for the Dodgers, they used only three relievers thanks to Matt Sauer’s five scoreless innings. To open the Dodger scoring, Shohei Ohtani blasted a solo home run, and every player contributed to the offense.

Making his first major league start, Jack Dreyer allowed a lead-off triple and a run-scoring single. He allowed a stolen base.

Shohei Ohtani blasted a solo home run on the first pitch he saw, the first as a father. Freddie Freeman doubled and went to third on a wild pitch. Freeman scored on Teoscar Hernández’s double. A throwing error allowed Will Smith to reach and move Teoscar Hernández to third. Max Muncy walked to load the bases. Tommy Edman’s sacrifice fly scored Teoscar Hernández. The Dodgers didn’t score any more runs.

Dreyer was perfect in the second.

With an out in the second, Ohtani walked and stole second. Freeman walked. Teoscar Hernández’s double scored Ohtani and moved Freeman to third. The Dodgers didn’t score any more.

Matt Sauer, who replaced Noah Davis on the roster, relieved Dreyer in the third. Sauer allowed a one-out single, but Pages threw out the runner trying to stretch the hit into a double. Sauer faced the minimum.

Edman walked with an out in the third inning and stole second. Andy Pages singled in Edman. Pages stole second. He went to third on a wild pitch. Michael Conforto walked. Conforto stole second. Mookie Betts had a two-run single. Freeman walked. The Dodgers didn’t score any more runs.

Sauer continued pitching in the fourth. He allowed an infield single to start the inning but retired the next three hitters.

The Dodgers didn’t do anything offensively in the fourth.

Sauer continued pitching in the fifth and was perfect.

The Dodgers went quietly in the fifth.

Sauer allowed a single in the sixth but hurled a scoreless inning.

Betts singled to open the sixth, and Freeman doubled, moving Betts to third.  Teoscar Hernández loaded the bases with catcher’s interference. Will Smith doubled in Betts and Freeman. Edman doubled in Hernández and Smith. On an error, Pages reached first, and Edman went to third.

Sauer continued pitching in the seventh and allowed a one-out single. He allowed a run-scoring single.

Kiké Hernández walked in the seventh with one out and moved to second on Miguel Rojas’ ground out. Teoscar Hernández singled in Kiké Hernández. Smith walked.

Luis Garcia relieved Sauer in the eighth and issued a walk with two outs. He retired the next batter.

With an out in the eighth, Pages blasted a solo home run. Pinch-hitting for Ohtani, Austin Barnes singled, and Kiké Hernández singled Barnes to second. Rojas singled, scoring Barnes. Teoscar Hernández singled in Kiké Hernández.

In the ninth, Kiké Hernández hurled a scoreless inning.
