Despite Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s rough start, the Dodgers used two home runs in the ninth to win an important game to remain three games in front of the San Diego Padres. The bullpen performed outstandingly, especially Ben Casparius who pitched three innings. Shohei Ohtani had two steals to give him 55, and he blasted his 54th home run. Teoscar Hernández, Kiké Hernández, and Mookie Betts homered. The Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 6-to-5.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowed a single with an out in the first. He gave up another single moving the runner to second. A passed ball advanced the runners in scoring position. He issued a walk to load the bases. He allowed a two-run single off Gavin Lux’s glove. He issued another walk to load the bases again. Yamamoto allowed a run-scoring ground ball. Since Mookie Betts made a fantastic defensive play in right field, Yamamoto managed to get out of the inning without allowing any more damage.
Shohei Ohtani singled to open the Dodger offense in the first. Betts singled moving Ohtani to second. Freddie Freeman grounded into a double play moving Ohtani to third. The Dodgers wasted a scoring opportunity.
After striking out the first in the second, Yamamoto walked a batter. He escaped from the jam scorelessly. However, Yamamoto was under a lot of stress during the first two innings.
To open the second, Will Smith walked but was erased on a double play.
With an out in the third, Yamamoto gave up a double and a run-scoring single with two outs. On 77 pitches, Yamamoto finished the third.
Kike Hernandez singled with an out in the third, and Ohtani had an infield single moving Hernandez to third. Ohtani stole his 54th base of the season. Betts walked to load the bases. Freeman grounded into a double play to end the scoring threat.
Joe Kelly relieved Yamamoto in the fourth. Kelly had a perfect inning.
Teoscar Hernandez clobbered his 31st home run of the season.
Ryan Brasier relieved Kelly in the fifth and promptly allowed a single. Brasier didn’t give up anything else.
The Dodgers didn’t do anything offensively in the fifth.
Ben Casparius relieved Brasier in the sixth. He allowed a run with an out in the sixth. He walked a batter. He couldn’t field his position, so the Rockies filled the bases. Casparius didn’t allow another run.
Freeman singled with an out in the sixth, and Teoscar Hernandez walked. The Dodgers didn’t capitalize on a scoring opportunity.
Casparius continued pitching in the seventh with a perfect inning.
Miguel Rojas walked, and Kike Hernandez blasted a two-run homer. Ohtani singled and stole his 55th base of the season. Freeman singled in Ohtani. Freeman advanced to second on a wild pitch. The Dodgers couldn’t score Freeman.
Casparius continued pitching in the eighth. He allowed a single with no outs. The Dodgers turned a double play. Casparius hurled a scoreless inning.
With an out in the eighth, Gavin Lux walked and moved to second. Rojas walked. The Dodgers couldn’t capitalize on the scoring opportunity.
Blake Treinen relieved Casparius in the ninth after a great outing. He had a perfect inning.
Shohei Ohtani blasted his 53rd home run of the year to start the ninth, and then, Betts homered.
