After a 13-inning marathon with a long rain delay, the Los Angeles Dodgers lost to the New York Mets 5-to-2 on a cool Saturday night at Citi Field. Tony Gonsolin couldn’t give the Dodgers what his team needed. The Dodgers scored only two runs in the second against lefthanded David Peterson. The Dodgers still lead the San Francisco Giants by 2 games in the Western Division.
Gonsolin was coming off a rough start against the Los Angeles Angels. His injured thumb that affected his last start had healed, but his velocity and command were inconsistent. The Dodgers needed Gonsolin to go at least six innings, but he couldn’t due to his high pitch count. Luckily, Anthony Banda and Bobby Miller could cover the last three innings.
In the Mets’ series, the Dodgers’ defense has been great. It has prevented many runs from scoring and helped the weary, injured pitching staff conserve pitches. The Dodgers must continue playing spectacular defense through the next 24 difficult games.
The Dodgers didn’t do anything offensively in the first.
