Monday, the Los Angeles Dodgers re-signed Jason Heyward to a one-year $9 million deal. Many Dodger fans are worried this deal will affect the Dodgers’ ability to sign Shohei Ohtani. These worries are nonsense, and the Dodgers will need depth to win another division title.

Heyward is an excellent right fielder. He allows Mookie Betts to play second base, his favorite position, against right-handed pitching, and the Dodgers don’t lose any defense.

The Chicago Cubs released Heyward after a disappointing 8-year $184 million contract last October. The Dodgers signed Heyward to a minor league deal, and he worked incredibly hard during last offseason to decrease the length of his swing. Heyward performed well when he hit .269 with 15 homers.

From his rookie season with the Atlanta Braves, Heyward was a team leader. Before the Braves drafted him and Freddie Freeman, they were best friends. During the 2023 season, he guided rookie James Outman, who figures to be a fixture in center field in the upcoming season. The Dodgers will need a clubhouse leader to help the chemistry in the 2024 season.

Heyward has played for the Braves, Saint Louis Cardinals, Cubs, and Dodgers. At 34, he can still contribute offensively and defensively. He is a super platoon player, and if Freeman ever gets injured, Heyward can play at first base.

The Dodgers can still afford Ohtani and two starting pitchers. They would be in trouble financially if they couldn’t, and Andrew Friedman runs the Dodgers well. The Dodgers have a problem with their forty-man roster, but many pundits believe the Dodgers will trade for a starting pitcher using their deep farm system. Many top prospects are on the forty-man roster.

Re-signing Heyward is a good move for the Dodgers, even if they sign Ohtani.
