With the rain coming, the Dodgers wished James Paxton would get through six innings. He pitched 1.2 innings and allowed 7 runs. The Dodgers tried to come back, but they couldn’t despite Jason Heyward’s three doubles and Shohei Ohtani’s two-run homer. The Los Angeles Dodgers lost to the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-to-6.
The Dodgers didn’t do anything offensively in the first against the top rookie starter in the National League.
The crafty left-hander James Paxton was on the mound for the Dodgers and pitched a perfect first inning.
With two outs in the second, Jason Heyward doubled but was stranded when Gavin Lux struck out.
To start the second, Paxton walked a batter, and Teoscar Hernandez committed an error. Then, he allowed a two-run double and a run-producing single. He allowed a single and a walk to load the bases, and the Pirates scored two more runs. Paxton allowed another single and another run.
Dave Roberts saw enough and relieved Paxton after 1.2 innings with Nick Ramirez. Will Smith had a passed ball that scored another run. Ramirez got out of the jam.
Andy Pages opened the third with a single and was erased by Mookie Betts’ force play. Shohei Ohtani blasted a two-run homer.
Ramirez continued pitching in the third and was perfect.
The Pirates made an error allowing Teoscar Hernandez to reach third. Hernandez didn’t score.
Anthony Banda was perfect in the fourth.
To open the fifth, Pages blasted his sixth homer in the major league career. Chris Taylor reached first on an error. Ohtani singled. Smith’s single loaded the bases. Hernandez couldn’t capitalize on the fabulous scoring opportunity.
Banda was having trouble in the fifth even making a throwing error and allowed a run.
To start the sixth, Heyward doubled and scored on a passed ball.
Ryan Yarbrough hurled a perfect sixth.
With two outs in the seventh, Freddie Freeman singled, stole second, and scored on Smith’s single. Hernandez couldn’t drive in any more runs.
Yarbrough continued pitching in the seventh and struggling and allowed two runs.
Heyward doubled to start the eighth and scored on Lux’s single. Mookie Betts walked. A wild pitch moved up the runners.
