The Dodgers Came Short

On Tuesday night at Loan Depot Park, when the Los Angeles Dodgers put Teoscar Hernández on the IL, they lost to the Miami Marlins 5-to-4 in ten innings. Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman homered. Tony Gonsolin went five innings and allowed two runs. The Dodger bullpen, which is exhausted, allowed three runs.

With an out in the first, Andy Pages doubled, and Freddie Freeman singled in Pages.

Tony Gonsolin was perfect, including two strikeouts, in the first.

In the second, Michael Conforto walked but was erased on a double play hit into by Miguel Rojas. James Outman struck out.

Gonsolin was brilliant, including a strikeout, in the second.

The Dodgers went down in order in the third.

With an out in the third, Gonsolin allowed a single, and thanks to a fabulous double play started by Pages, Gonsolin faced the minimum.

Will Smith singled with an out in the fourth and advanced to second on Max Muncy’s ground-out. The Dodgers couldn’t capitalize on a scoring opportunity.

Gonsolin gave up a lead-off single in the fourth and a stolen base. He issued a walk. He struck out two to escape from the jam scorelessly.

In the fifth, Hyeseong Kim singled with two outs and was caught stealing.

To start the fifth, Gonsolin gave up a single and a two-run homer with two outs. He walked a batter and allowed a stolen base. Gonsolin got out of the inning.

Shohei Ohtani sent the ball to the moon for a home run to start the sixth. Freeman went deep for the 351st home run of his career. Smith doubled, and Muncy walked. The Dodgers couldn’t capitalize on the scoring opportunity.

Luis Garcia relieved Gonsolin in the sixth and allowed a lead-off double. He threw a wild pitch, moving the runner to third. He gave up a run-scoring double. He allowed a go-ahead single but finished the inning.

James Outman walked to begin the seventh but was erased on a force play hit into by Kim. Ohtani doubled in Kim, the tying run. Ohtani went to third on Pages’ ground-out. The Dodgers couldn’t capitalize on the scoring opportunity.

Alex Vesia relieved Garcia in the seventh and issued a walk to begin the inning. The runner stole second. Vesia struck out the side.

In the eighth with an out, Muncy walked and stole second. He went to third on Conforto’s ground-out. He didn’t score.

Anthony Banda relieved Vesia and allowed a one-out single. He allowed a stolen base. He issued a walk. He allowed an infield single to load the bases. The Dodgers escaped the jam scorelessly thanks to Muncy starting a fabulous double play.

The Dodgers didn’t do anything offensively in the ninth.

Tanner Scott relieved Banda in the ninth with a perfect inning.

With Ohtani on second in the tenth, Freeman was intentionally walked with an out. Smith grounded into a double play to end the inning.

J.P. Feyereisen relieved Scott in the tenth and intentionally walked the first batter. He allowed a single to load the bases. Chris Taylor replaced Pages in the infield. Feyereisen allowed the game-winning single.
