The Dodger Defense Undermined May’s Fantastic Outing

On a cool Monday night at Nationals Park, the Los Angeles Dodgers lost to the Washington Nationals 6-to-4. Dustin May had a great 6-inning start, but it was undermined by poor defense. Shohei Ohtani had three hits, including a two-run homer. However, the Dodgers didn’t have enough offense to pick up defensive lapses.

Earlier in the day, the Dodgers visited the White House. Clayton Kershaw delivered the speech, and Shohei Ohtani visited the Oval Office.

To open the first, Shohei Ohtani had an infield single and was erased on Mookie Betts’ double play. The Dodgers went down in order.

Dustin May walked the lead-off batter and allowed a stolen base. He walked another batter. May escaped from the jam scorelessly.

The Dodgers didn’t do anything offensively in the second.

May opened up the second with a walk and a single. He allowed a run-scoring single. Miguel Rojas’ error allowed the Nationals to score a run. May didn’t allow anything else.

With two outs in the third, Chris Taylor singled. Shohei Ohtani socked a two-run homer to tie the score. Betts walked. The Dodgers didn’t do anything else.

To open the third, May allowed a single after hitting May. He allowed a stolen base. A ground ball moved the runner to third. He allowed a run-scoring single. A wild pitch moved the runner to second. May didn’t allow anything else.

Teoscar Hernández singled to open the fourth. The next three Dodgers struck out.

In the fourth, May retired the Nats in order.

With two outs in the fifth, Ohtani tripled. Betts grounded out to end the inning.

May retired the Nats in order in the fifth.

The Dodgers went down in order in the sixth.

May was perfect in the sixth.

The Dodgers didn’t do anything offensively in the seventh.

Anthony Banda relieved May in the seventh and allowed a single to start the inning. He allowed a stolen base. Banda allowed a two-run homer. He allowed a double.

Banda was relieved by Matt Sauer with one out in the seventh. He allowed a single that enabled Tommy Edman to throw out a runner at the plate but allowed a run-scoring double.

Michael Conforto walked to open the eighth. A wild pitch moved Conforto to second. Betts singled in Conforto. Tommy Edman singled Betts to second. Teoscar Hernández singled Betts to third. Will Smith singled in Betts. Kiké Hernández struck out to end the inning.

Sauer allowed a single to open the eighth.

Max Muncy opened the ninth with a double. Ohtani walked.
