After 21 months of having his second ulnar collateral ligament repair, Shohei Ohtani takes the mound for the first time as a Los Angeles Dodger. He starts against the San Diego Padres. If the Dodgers didn’t have fifteen pitchers, they probably would have waited after the All-Star break to allow Ohtani to pitch.
When Ohtani pitches, he is a Cy Young candidate. He has a 95+ miles-per-hour fastball, sweeper, slider, and splitter. He has a 3.01 ERA. Ohtani will bolster the injured starting rotation. He might pitch two innings. Ohtani’s return will be a good thing for the team’s morale.
From the beginning of the 2025 season, the Dodgers have had good news about their pitching. The Dodgers’ pitchers have been going on the IL left and right. On Sunday, Dave Roberts hinted that Roki Sasaki might not return this season. Getting Ohtani back on the mound is huge.
Offensively, Ohtani has been solid. His 25 home runs are the third-most in the major leagues and the most in the National League. Ohtani’s offense is critical for the Dodgers’ success.
