Hours after learning Mookie Betts will miss 6-8 weeks with a broken left hand, Shohei Ohtani and Miguel Rojas had three hits each, and Freddie Freeman walked four times and had a single. James Paxton was brilliant for seven innings and allowed a solo home run. J.P. Feyereisen pitched well for 1.2 innings, and then he was affected by the Coors Field illness. On a beautiful Monday night at Coors Field, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Colorado Rockies 9-to-5.
With two outs in the first, Freddie Freeman walked and scored on Teoscar Hernandez’s double. Andy Pages was plunked in the hand by a pitch. The Dodgers stranded the runners.
James Paxton must improve with Yoshinobu Yamamoto out for the foreseeable future. Pitching at Coors Field is a challenge for any major league pitcher. He retired the Rockies in order.
To lead off the second inning, Miguel Rojas singled. Cavan Biggio moved Rojas to second. Shohei Ohtani singled in Rojas. Will Smith tripled in Ohtani. Freeman walked. Teoscar Hernandez flew out to end the scoring threat.
To open the second inning, Paxton hung a breaking ball for a solo home run. He retired the next three batters effortlessly.
Rojas singled with two outs in the third but didn’t score.
With an out in the third, Paxton committed an error but got out of the jam.
Ohtani doubled with an out in the fourth, and Freeman walked. Hernandez struck out to end the scoring threat.
Paxton had a perfect fourth.
With an out in the fifth, Jason Heyward had an infield single, but the Dodgers wasted another scoring opportunity.
Paxton baffled the Rockies in the fifth.
Ohtani doubled with one out in the sixth and went to third on Smith’s fly. Freeman walked. The runners were stranded when Teoscar Hernandez struck out.
Despite allowing a single, Paxton breezed through the sixth.
With an out in the seventh, Heyward singled and scored on Rojas’ double. Biggio’s single scored Rojas. Ending the scoring opportunity, Gavin Lux hit into a double play.
With two outs in the seventh, Paxton issued a walk but finished the inning with a strikeout.
To start the eighth, Ohtani walked and stole second. Ohtani was balked to third. Freeman walked for the fifth time in the game. Hernandez walked to load the bases. Heyward singled in two runs.
J. P. Feyereisen relieved Paxton in the eighth with a perfect inning.
After Biggio walked, Gavin Lux doubled scoring Lux. Lux scored on Smith’s sacrifice fly. Freeman singled.
