The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 8-to-4.
On Sunday, Dustin May made a fantastic return to the mound at Camelback Ranch. He pitched an inning and allowed nothing. He hadn’t pitched competitively for two years. He still is nasty.
May burst onto the scene in August 2019 and looked like the future of the Dodger starting rotation. He pitched Opening Day in 2020 and was integral to the 2020 World Champion Dodgers.
At the start of the 2021 season, May was brilliant until he faced the Milwaukee Brewers on May 1st when he tore his UCL requiring Tommy John surgery. He returned to major league action in August 2022 when he struck out nine Miami Marlins. However, he struggled with his back.
The Dodgers and their fans thought the 2023 season was going to May’s year. He was fantastic until he faced the Minnesota Twins on May 17th when he injured his flexor tendon. He tried the PRP injection, but it didn’t work. He underwent a flexor ligament and a Tommy John revision surgery.
While May was working hard to come back after the 2024 All-Star break, he tore his esophagus while eating salad. It was a life-threatening situation that needed a four-hour surgery. He couldn’t pick up a ball until this January. It might be a good thing in disguise.
May looked good in his first inning facing the San Diego Padres. He has a jerky delivery, and most fans think the delivery is putting unnecessary stress on May’s arm. This might not be true. May is outstanding with a two-seam fastball, four-seam fastball, cutter, slider, and curveball. His two-seam fastball has incredible slider-like movement. If May stays healthy, he will be a fabulous pitcher.
