A picture-perfect Saturday afternoon at Camelback Ranch, after two rain-shortened games, the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the world champion Texas Rangers 7-to-1.
Michael Grove pitched a satisfactory first inning but allowed a single. In the second, Grove struck out the side. He had a good slider that contributed to his success. In the third, he walked a batter but was stranded. Saturday was Grove’s first start in the Cactus League. With an out in the fourth, Grove left.
Freddie Freeman singled, Max Muncy walked, and James Outman singled in Freeman. To open the second, Kiké Hernàndez singled but was stranded.
Freeman and Muncy walked in the third but were stranded in the third.
Daniel Hudson pitching on his 37th birthday was perfect as he finished the fourth inning.
Blake Treinen had a comeback on his ribs and was forced to leave. He walked off the field under his power.
J.P. Feyereisen replaced Treinen and allowed a double. He finally got a flyout.
Will Smith homered.
Feyereisen continued pitching in the sixth. He walked the lead-off man and a single before Roberts took him. Suaryn Lao relieved Feyereisen. An error by Hernández allowed the Rangers to score a run.
Joe Kelly pitched a perfect seventh inning.
Chris Okey, a backup catcher, blasted a two-run homer. Kevin Pablo doubled and scored on Drew Avens’ single. Trey Sweeney doubled moving Avens to third, but they were stranded.
Ryan Brasier hurled a perfect eighth.
In the eighth, Chris Owings socked a two-run blast.
