At Tempe, Arizona, on an overcast Saturday afternoon, the Los Angeles Dodgers tied the Los Angeles Angels at seven.
Tyler Glasnow achieved a childhood dream on Saturday by pitching for his hometown team. He struggled with his control in the first inning, but he didn’t allow a run of a marvelous defensive play by second baseman Mookie Betts. In early December, the Los Angeles Dodgers traded for Glasnow from the Tampa Bay Rays by sending Ryan Pepiot and Johnny Deluca. Immediately, the Dodgers signed Glasnow to a contract extension.
It isn’t easy to judge any pitcher in his first outing of spring training, but Glasnow didn’t do well. He became the first Dodger starter this spring to allow a run. He was slated to pitch two innings, but he reached his pitch limit after 1.2 innings.
The Dodgers and Glasnow hope he will improve in his next outing. The Dodgers have Glasnow slated to start one of the games in South Korea.
Daniel Hudson made his 2024 Cactus League debut and issued a walk but nothing else. He has missed most of the last two seasons with knee problems. Hudson is on a minor league deal, but the Dodgers hope he will be an integral part of their bullpen.
Coming off a major knee surgery, Gavin Lux hasn’t lost a step. He had an infield single and scored on Andy Pages’ double. On Monday, Lux is expected to play shortstop for the first time since his significant knee injury. The Dodgers are confident Lux will be the Opening Day shortstop.
During the fifth inning, the Dodgers’ defense fell apart and allowed the Angels to score two runs. While Matt Gage, a lefthander who came from the New York Yankees for Caleb Ferguson, was on the mound when the Angels scored their two runs, he didn’t pitch badly.
The young Dodgers need to work on their fielding fundamentals. These players aren’t expected to be on the major league roster on Opening Day unless something goes horribly wrong. They might be promoted during the regular season.
In the eighth, Jose Ramos blasted a long home run. The Dodgers filled the bases, and the Dodgers scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Ryan Ward cleared the bases with a double.
In the eighth, the Angels tied the score on a two-run homer.
