On a hot Friday night at Dodger Stadium, the Los Angeles Dodgers resumed their playing schedule after the All-Star break. Gavin Stone looked like an All-Star for five innings. The bullpen was perfect. The Dodger offense was quiet until the eighth when Freddie Freeman hit a grand slam. The Dodgers defeated the Boston Red Sox 4-to-1.
Gavin Stone was brilliant in the first despite allowing a double.
Will Smith singled with an out in the first but didn’t advance.
Stone had a marvelous changeup working as he pitched a perfect second.
In the second, the Dodgers did nothing offensively.
Stone allowed a single to open the third, the runner stole second, but Stone stranded the runner.
Miguel Vargas walked and stole second in the third. He was stranded.
To open the fourth, Stone allowed two infield singles. Stone got out of the jam.
With an out in the fourth, Teoscar Hernandez doubled but didn’t score.
With two outs in the fifth, Stone allowed a solo home run.
The Dodgers didn’t do anything offensively in the fifth.
Stone faced only one batter who singled in the sixth, and Dave Roberts relieved Stone with Anthony Banda. He was perfect.
The Dodgers didn’t do anything offensively in the sixth.
Alex Vesia relieved Banda in the seventh. A misplayed fly ball went for a double. Vesia continued his superb season by striking out the side.
In the seventh, the Dodgers couldn’t score.
Ryan Yarbrough allowed an infield single in the eighth but hurled a scoreless eighth inning.
Another walk to Vargas began the eighth, and after an out, Shohei Ohtani doubled. Will Smith was intentionally walked to load the bases. Freddie Freeman blasted a grand slam.
Daniel Hudson pitched a scoreless ninth.
