Dodgers Fall to Cubs: Game Highlights & Key Takeaways

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost to the Chicago Cubs 7-3.

Tommy Edman reached on an error with one out in the first. Michael Conforto hit into a double play to end the first.

For the first time since August 2023, Tony Gonsolin started a game because he had Tommy John surgery. He allowed a single to start his inning. Ryan Ward, a minor leaguer, made an outstanding catch while playing right field. Gonsolin was brilliant in his first inning.

To lead off the second, Austin Barnes singled. Miguel Rojas singled Barnes to second. Chris Taylor had an infield single to load the bases. Andy Pages singled, but nobody scored. The Dodgers stranded the bases loaded while scoring no runs.

Landon Knack relieved Gonsolin. Knack hit a batter with a pitch. He allowed a single moving the runner to second. Kiké Hernández made a good play to get the first out. Knack allowed a stolen base. Mookie Betts made a good play though the Cubs scored a run. Knack escaped the jam.

Betts opened third with a single, his first during spring training. Edman singled Betts to third. Conforto walked to load the bases. Barnes singled in Betts. Kiké Hernández struck out and Rojas grounded out to end the inning.

Luis Garcia relieved Knack and allowed a double to start the third. Garcia uncorked a wild pitch to score a run, and he gave up a double. He gave up a two-run homer. Betts made another good play to end the inning.

With two outs in the fourth, Ward singled and went to third on Betts’ second single of the game. Edman flew out to end the inning.

Ben Casparius relieved Garcia in the fifth. Pages misplayed a simple flyball into a triple. Casparius allowed a sacrifice fly and walked Ian Happ. He allowed a single. Casparius escaped the jam.

With two outs in the fifth, Kiké Hernández walked and Rojas had an infield single. Hernández got in a rundown to be the last out in the inning.

Jack Dreyer relieved Casparius in the fifth and allowed a single with one out. A force play should have been a double play. Dreyer allowed no runs.

Andy Pages singled to begin the sixth, and an error allowed another Dodger to reach. Another Dodger walked to load the bases. The Dodgers don’t score any runs.

Another error by the Dodgers. The Cubs scored another run. The Dodgers allowed an unchallenged stolen base.

The Dodgers hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning. The Dodgers loaded the bases, but they couldn’t capitalize on the scoring opportunity.

Carlos Duran pitched a perfect seventh inning.

#87 hurled the eighth inning, and the right fielder made an error for the Dodgers. He didn’t allow any runs.

Chris Oakey singled but was erased by a double play.
