On a cool Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Atlanta Braves 3-to-1. Dustin May returned to the mound after missing almost two years and was brilliant for five innings. Anthony Banda, Alex Vesia, Blake Treinen, and Tanner Scott were excellent. Mookie Betts socked a two-run homer, and Will Smith singled in the third run. The Dodgers set the franchise record for wins to start the season.
Max Muncy and Michael Conforto had a regular off-day against Chris Sale, the 2024 National League Cy Young award winner.
On Sunday morning, Freddie Freeman slipped in a shower at home and sprained his surgically repaired ankle. The Dodgers think Freeman will return to the lineup on Wednesday.
Dustin May was making his first major league start in almost two years, and he struck out the side without any problems.
The Dodgers didn’t do anything offensively in the first.
To open the second, May allowed a single. On a perfect double play ball, Mookie Betts made a throwing error that scored a run for the Braves. He allowed nothing else.
Teoscar Hernández had an infield single to open the second after he fouled a ball off his toe. Will Smith was plunked by a pitch. The Dodgers wasted a scoring opportunity.
May retired the Braves in order.
With two outs in the third, Betts was plunked by a pitch. The Dodgers couldn’t capitalize on a scoring opportunity.
Although May allowed runners on, he pitched scorelessly in the fourth.
The Dodgers didn’t do anything offensively in the fourth.
May was excellent in the fifth. the defense turned a double play. In his return to the major league mound, he or the Dodgers could ask for any more.
The Dodgers couldn’t do anything offensively in the fifth.
Anthony Banda relieved May in the sixth. With two outs in the sixth, he allowed a double and issued a walk.
To open the sixth, Shohei Ohtani singled, and Betts socked a two-run homer. Tommy Edman singled. Edman stole second and went to third on a throwing error. Will Smith singled in Edman. Smith stole second. The Dodgers didn’t knock in Smith.
Alex Vesia relieved Banda in the seventh. Teoscar Hernández caught a fly ball in the crowd to open the inning. He was brilliant in the seventh.
The Dodgers didn’t do anything offensively in the seventh.
Blake Treinen relieved Vesia in the eighth and allowed a lead-off single. The runner stole second. He didn’t let the Braves score.
Tanner Scott saved the victory.
