With needing one more win to become world champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers tried having a bullpen game to clinch. Well, it didn’t work.
The Dodgers had relievers who didn’t perform well. Landon Knack pitched well and saved the rest of the bullpen for tomorrow. Freddie Freeman had a two-run homer, and Will Smith had a solo home run. The Dodgers lost to the New York Yankees 11-to-4.
Throughout the postseason, the Dodgers were forced to have bullpen games because of their many injured starters. Sometimes, Dave Roberts must save his high-leverage relievers for a game that the team can win. Tonight was one of those nights. Ben Casparius and Daniel Hudson struggled. The Dodgers will be world champions eventually.
With an out in the first, Mookie Betts doubled. Freddie Freeman blasted a two-run homer. Teoscar Hernández had an infield single.
Ben Casparius started for the Dodgers. He walked Juan Soto. He walked Aaron Judge. Jazz Chisholm’s ground out advanced the runners. Casparius got out of the jam scorelessly.
Gavin Lux doubled to start the second. Tommy Edman lined into a double play.
Casparius continued pitching in the second. He walked a batter with an out. He allowed a double moving the runner to third. Verdugo’s grounder scored a run, but the Yankees didn’t prolong the rally.
The Dodgers didn’t do anything offensively in the third.
Daniel Hudson relieved Casparius in the third. He plunked Judge with an out. Chisholm singled moving Judge to third. Chisholm stole second. He walked Giancarlo Stanton to load the bases. Anthony Volpe hit a grand slam.
With an out in the fourth, Max Muncy walked. Kiké Hernández hit into a force play erasing Muncy. The Dodgers didn’t score.
Landon Knack relieved Hudson in the fourth. Alex Verdugo opened the fourth with a single. The Dodgers turned a double play. Knack faced the minimum.
Will Smith homered to start the fifth… Tommy Edman walked. Shohei Ohtani singled moving Edman to second. Betts hit into a force play erasing Ohtani. Freeman hit into a force play erasing Betts and scoring Edman. Teoscar Hernández flew out to end the inning.
Knack continued pitching in the fifth. Edman made an error allowing Judge to reach. Knack walked Chisholm. The Yankees wasted a scoring opportunity.
The Dodgers didn’t do anything offensively in the sixth.
Knack continued pitching in the sixth. He allowed a solo home run to Austin Wells. Knack didn’t allow anything else.
With an out in the seventh, Edman walked. Edman stole second. The Dodgers didn’t score.
Knack continued pitching in the seventh with a perfect inning.
The Dodgers didn’t do anything offensively in the eighth.
Brent Honeywell relieved Knack in the eighth. With an out, Volpe doubled. Verdugo singled scoring Volpe. Honeywell allowed a three-run homer.
