Perhaps, many Dodger fans have noticed they haven’t seen Michael Grove this spring. He will miss the entire 2025 season.
Since his 2022 major league debut, Grove has been a journeyman. He has filled in as a starter or a long reliever. As a journeyman, Grove has twenty wins and seven losses with a 5.48 ERA.
Before Grove reached the major leagues, he had gone through Tommy John surgery.
The Dodgers have had a healthy spring training but have had injuries to the bullpen. Michael Kopech has forearm tightness, and Evan Phillips has a torn rotator cuff. The Dodgers expect both to be ready sometime in April. Brusdar Graterol will be missing the first half of the 2025 season at least after having right shoulder surgery.
While the Los Angeles Dodgers signed Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates and re-signed Blake Treinen, the injuries to prominent relievers will affect the Dodgers’ bullpen.
The Dodgers have many candidates for a long man reliever job. Since Ben Casparius has been super, he figures to be in the bullpen.
Tony Gonsolin, Dustin May, and Justin Wrobleski have been pitching great this spring training. They wanted to earn the fifth spot in the starting rotation. Since May has missed almost two years with various health issues, he hasn’t built enough to be on the Opening Day roster, and I expect him to be in the extended spring training. Coming off Tommy John surgery in August 2023, Gonsolin has been fantastic, and I expect him as the fifth starter in the rotation. Wrobleski should be the long man in the bullpen until the Dodgers decide something else.
The Dodger bullpen is a key to success. Although the Dodger bullpen has suffered many injuries, the bullpen still will be one of elite bullpens in the major leagues.
