On a hot Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium, Clayton Kershaw rebounded from a rough outing against the San Diego Padres but couldn’t get out of the fifth. Brusdar Graterol made his debut in the 2024 season but left the game with a strained right hamstring. Brent Honeywell pitched a career-long 3.2 innings. Teoscar Hernàndez homered. The Los Angeles Dodgers lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 6-to-2.
Before the game, Dave Roberts said that the Dodgers would evaluate Clayton Kershaw after five starts. For the first time in his 17-year career, he was coming back from an arm surgery. Kershaw got a strikeout in his third start. Something he didn’t have against the San Diego Padres.
Kershaw had a perfect first inning.
With two outs in the first, Freddie Freeman had his 500th double but didn’t score.
In the second, Kershaw hurled a perfect inning. In his two innings, he used 21 pitches.
With two outs in the second, Andy Pages singled but didn’t advance.
Kershaw allowed a soft-hit single to open the third but stranded the runner thanks to Will Smith catching him stealing.
Kevin Kiermaier opened the third with reaching on an error. The Dodgers stranded him.
Kershaw’s breaking balls were working. While he allowed singles to Trea Turner and Bryce Harper, Kershaw was superb at stranding those runners in the fourth.
The Dodgers didn’t do anything offensively in the fourth.
With an out in the fifth, Kershaw allowed a double and a hit batter. Kershaw’s velocity was 91 mph. Kershaw allowed an RBI single.
With two outs in the fifth, Dave Roberts relieved Kershaw with Joe Kelly. Kelly allowed a stolen base but stranded the runners.
Nick Ahmed singled with an out in the fifth but was erased on a force play. The Dodgers didn’t score.
Brusdar Graterol made his 2024 season debut in the sixth. He allowed a single with an out Graterol was hurt in his delivery. He grabbed his right hamstring and needed to be helped off the field.
Brent Honeywell would relieve Graterol. He allowed a walk and a single good for a run. He allowed a stolen base and another walk. He allowed another single that scored two more runs. Honeywell finally got out of the jam.
To open the sixth, Teoscar Hernàndez doubled and scored on Smith’s grounder.
With an out in the seventh, Honeywell allowed two singles but didn’t allow the Phillies to score a run thanks to Pages’ outfield assist.
Kiké Hernàndez had an infield single to start the seventh, and Pages walked. Austin Barnes was pinch-hitting for Kiermaier but struck out. Shohei Ohtani flied out to end the scoring threat.
The Dodgers announced that Graterol had a strained right hamstring.
Honeywell allowed a single to start the eighth but convinced the Phillies to hit into a double play. He got out of the eighth with facing the minimum.
Teoscar Hernàndez socked a home run to lead off in the eighth.
Honeywell continued pitching in the ninth and allowed a lead-off home run. He was pitching the longest in the major leagues. He allowed another home run, a monstrous shot. Teoscar Hernàndez made a beautiful catch in left field. Honeywell got out of the ninth without more damage.
