Friday, the Los Angeles Dodgers signed a utility fielder Tommy Edman to a five-year $74 million. Edman played a crucial role in the Dodger World Championship, the first full-season world championship since 1988.
At the trading deadline during the 2024 season, the Dodgers acquired Edman from the Saint Louis Cardinals. While with the Cardinals, Edman won a Gold Glove at second base. The Dodgers liked Edman’s versatility for many years.
Since Edman had offseason wrist surgery and during his rehab assignment with the Cardinals he injured his ankle, he didn’t make his 2024 debut on August 19th.
In 37 games during the regular season, Edman had a .237 batting average, 6 home runs, and 20 RBI. During the 2024 postseason, he had a .328 batting average, 2 home runs, and 13 RBI. In the NLCS against the New York Mets, Edman won the MVP.
Edman can play second base, shortstop, and center fielder. While the Dodgers plan Mookie Betts to move into the infield, they don’t know who will play center field. Edman should play in center field. However, the Dodgers don’t know who will play shortstop.
Signing Edman to a contract extension doesn’t affect the Dodgers’ ability to re-sign Teoscar Hernández, Kiké Hernández, and Blake Treinen.
