An Ugly Eighth Inning Spoils Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s Return

Though the weather cooled down at Dodger Stadium, the Chicago Cubs remained hot. Yoshinobu Yamamoto was brilliant in his fourth innings. Tommy Edman hit his first two home runs as a Dodger, and Max Muncy blasted a solo home run. The Dodgers made three errors in the eighth that allowed the Cubs to score four runs in the eighth. The Los Angeles Dodgers lost to the Chicago Cubs 6-to-3 and remained 4.5 games over the San Diego Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Dodgers activated Brusdar Graterol while they must place Anthony Banda with a broken left hand on the IL. Banda has been one of the best Dodger relievers in the 2024 season. Graterol has missed most of the season with a shoulder injury and a strained hamstring. The Dodgers hope Graterol will perform well for the rest of the season and the postseason.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto struck out the side in the first inning.

The Dodgers didn’t do anything offensively in the first.

With an out in the second, Yamamoto allowed a single. He allowed another single, and the Cubs scored a run on an infield single. Yamamoto got out of the jam without allowing any more damage.

Tommy Edman opened the second inning with a solo home run.

Yamamoto was perfect in the third, and he already had eight strikeouts.

Kiké Hernández singled to start the third. Austin Barnes singled. Shohei Ohtani smoked the ball but hit into a double play.

Yamamoto allowed a single with an out in the fourth but faced the minimum thanks to a double play begun by Freddie Freeman.

Edman hit his second solo home run of the night with an out in the fourth.

Ryan Brasier relieved Yamamoto who was brilliant in his major league return. Yamamoto hadn’t pitched in the major leagues since mid-June. With an out in the fifth, Brasier allowed a single, but he got out of the inning scorelessly.

To open the fifth, Max Muncy blasted a solo home run.

Blake Treinen relieved Brasier in the sixth. With an out, he allowed a double. He ended the sixth inning scorelessly.

The Dodgers didn’t do anything offensively in the sixth.

Alex Vesia relieved Treinen in the seventh. Despite allowing a one-out single, Vesia was brilliant.

Andy Pages reached first on an error to open the seventh but was caught stealing. Miguel Rojas singled. The Dodgers didn’t score.

Va continued pitching in the eighth but walked the only batter to face him. Evan Phillips relieved Vesia. Austin Barnes made a throwing error. After Phillips allowed a single, Edman threw wildly to third, allowing the tying runs to score. Another error by Kiké Hernández scored the go-ahead run for the Cubs. Phillips allowed a run-scoring double. A ground out scored another run.

With two outs in the eighth, Betts singled.

Brusdar Graterol relieved Phillips in the ninth. With two outs, he allowed two singles but didn’t allow a run.
