On a perfect Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Washington Nationals 6-to-3.
Kyle Hurt was making his first major league start, and he allowed three hits in the first inning. Thanks to a fabulous play by Kiké Hernández, the Nationals didn’t score in the first. Hurt settled down and pitched a perfect second.
Mookie Betts opened the game with a single. Shohei Ohtani singled moving Betts to second, and Freddie Freeman walked. Teoscar Hernández hit into a double play.
Andy Pages collected his first major league single in the first at-bat in the major leagues. Miguel Rojas walked. Austin Barnes singled in Pages, and Betts singled in Rojas in the second.
Ryan Yarbrough allowed a two-run homer in the third. He pitched a perfect fourth. In the fifth, Yarbrough looked good as he retired the side in order. Yarbrough was brilliant through the seventh inning.
The Dodgers were active offensively in the fourth, but nobody scored.
In the fifth, Kiké Hernández homered.
In the seventh, Betts doubled and moved to third on Shohei Ohtani’s fly. Freeman walked. Teoscar Hernandez used an infield single to drive in Betts.
While Joe Kelly quickly retired the first two batters, he walked and hit a batter before getting the last out of the eighth inning.
In the eighth, Miguel Rojas doubled, and Betts’ single drove in Rojas. Ohtani had an infield single.
Daniel Hudson hurled a good ninth despite a single.
Carl Erskine at 97 passed away. He was the last The Boys of Summer to pass. He struck out 14 in Game 3 of the 1953 World Series. He played in five All-Star Games and pitched two no-hitters. He started the first Dodger game after the team moved to Los Angeles. After he retired, he was a champion for human rights and people with special needs. Because he had a son with Down Syndrome, he was a big supporter of the Special Olympics.
